Parent Workshop - Behaviour, Big Feelings and Self Regulation Parent Workshop

  • Date
  • April 22,2024

  • Time
  • 06:30:pm - 08:00:pm

The capacity to emotionally regulate is one of the most important building blocks for success and social andemotional wellbeing. This will take time to develop, and in the meantime, things can get messy. For many youngpeople, big feelings will drive big behaviour, which can be confusing and challenging for them and the adults whocare for them. The more we understand the what, why, and how of feelings and the behaviours they fuel, the morewe can respond to young people (and ourselves) more effectively and compassionately. Ultimately, our responseswill nurture the vital foundations of self-regulation in children and their capacity to feel and express the full rangeof human emotions in healthy ways.
We will explore:
  • where big feelings come from and why they have an important job to do
  • how to respond to feelings and behaviour in the moment to make way for calm and connection
  • practical ways to help children understand feelings and behaviour why this matters
  • a new way to understand feelings and behaviour and how this can be used to support social-emotionaldevelopment, learning, regulation, and behaviour
  • changing the way we think about discipline - why traditional disciplines don't work and what to do instead
  • building a relationship with young people that will open our capacity to lead, guide, and teach
  • connection after conflict - how to repair after an emotional or relational ‘collision’
  • the neuroscience of co-regulation - how to lead young people in co-regulation rather than co-dysregulationand why this feels tough sometimes (and what to do when that happens)
  • when behaviour is extra big - the common origins of challenging behaviour, how to respond in the moment, and the practical strategies that will effect lasting change
  • how to establish meaningful boundaries with love and leadership, and how to respond when those boundarie sare challenged
  • building their emotional toolbox - the strategies children can use to understand and manage feelings.
